Towable RV Sales Finish 2011 Up 5.4%
Retail sales of towable RVs finished 2011 up 5.4 percent ahead of the 2010 pace, Statistical Surveys Inc. (SSI) has reported.
The year-over-year improvement was powered by a 12.6 percent increase in December sales over December 2010.
The Grand Rapids, Mich.-based research firm reported the following results by each vehicle segment:
- Travel trailer sales rose 16 percent in December and 8 percent for the entire year.
- Fifth-wheel sales were up 13.5 percent in December and rose 2.9 percent for the year.
- Folding camping trailer sales fell 18.9 percent in December and finished the year down 7.9 percent from 2010.
- Park model sales plunged 23.6 percent in December and finished 2011 off 5 percent from 2010.
Thor Industries Inc. retained its No. 1 ranking among all towable manufacturers with a 36.6 percent market share for the year. Forest River Inc. was in second with a 21.2 percent share.
Thor was the market share leader in 2011 in travel trailers sales (33.1 percent), fifth-wheels (54.4 percent) and park models (23.2 percent).
Forest River was the folding camping trailer leader for 2011 with a 36.4 percent share.
SSI reported earlier that sales of motorized RVs were up 12.8 percent in December over December 2010 and sales for all of 2011 were ahead of the 2010 pace by 1.9 percent.
In separate year-end reports about the Canadian market for all of 2011, SSI reported that towable RV sales were up 2.9 percent, while motorized RV sales were down 8.4 percent.
