Carefree RV Resorts Announces Talent Show Winners
More than 1,200 people gathered at Red Oaks Carefree RV Resort in Bushnell, Fla., to watch contestants from 22 Carefree RV Resorts compete in the company’s first snowbird talent competition.
“It was an amazing event,” Dave Napp, CEO of Carefree RV Resorts, stated in a news release. “We had acts that featured vocals, guitar, harmonica, clogging, yodeling and piano with vocal accompaniment.”
Kenny Channels, a Gatlinburg, Tenn., resident who is staying at Carefree’s Riptide RV Resort in Key Largo, Fla., won the $5,000 grand prize with a vocal medley that included songs by George Strait and a ballad Channels wrote called “Somebody’s got to do it.”
Glenn Gillespie of Plattsburg, N.Y., who is staying at Carefree RV Resort in Daytona, won a second place prize of $500 plus two nights at Carefree’s Pelican Motel in Marathon, Fla., in the Florida Keys for singing and playing the guitar to a song called “Yodeling Cowboy.”
Ed Martin from Carefree’s Sweetwater RV Resort in Zephyrhills won a seven-day Caribbean cruise through a random drawing, courtesy of OmniTours.
Carefree itself covered the cost of the other prizes with Jacobsen Homes and Waste Management contributing $2,500 and $500, respectively, toward the $5,000 grand prize.
Napp said snowbird interest in the talent show had been building for months.
Competitions were initially held at 22 of Carefree’s parks in Florida. The winners from those competitions then competed at Red Oaks Carefree RV Resort in Bushnell for the grand prize.
“It was really fun watching everyone compete,” Napp said. “Many of our parks videotaped their competitions and created parties around their events and just took a lot of pride in each winner. Many parks also rented buses and vans to bring up their customers to cheer their park’s winner at the final competition. We initially thought we were only going to have about 600 spectators, but we wound up with more than 1,200.”
Carefree also treated all of the contestants and spectators to a free spaghetti dinner following the competition.
Channels said he was impressed by how well organized the competitions were, particularly the final event. “I think everybody that attended and participated had a very enjoyable experience,” he said.
“We had a good time,” said Gillespie, adding that he and his wife are already looking forward to their return trip to Florida next winter, when they get to stay at Carefree’s Pelican Motel in the Florida Keys.
