Manitobans clicked their way to camping this morning, booking a record number of campground reservations online.

Today (April 2)  was the first day people could reserve a spot in the province’s parks and camping destinations. By midday, 12,570 online booking had been made, up from 11,929 by the same time last year, the Winnipeg Free Press reported.

A total of 64,268 campsites were booked through the made-in-Manitoba reservation system last season.

Conservation and Water Stewardship Minister Gord Mackintosh also announced today his department will start reviewing ways to make the reservation system more convenient and accessible.

Most campgrounds open May 11. Northern campgrounds and, weather permitting, those along the lakes will open May 18, except Iskwasum Landing, which is slated to open May 25.

The May long weekend will be liquor free in all provincial parks, and some liquor-free campsites will be available all season in designated spots at Grand Beach and Bird’s Hill provincial parks.
