Retail sales of Class A and Class C motorhomes in the U.S. soared 21.4 percent in February 2012 over February a year ago, Statistical Surveys Inc. (SSI) has reported.

Class C sales dominated the report with sales 73 percent higher than a year ago. It was more than enough to offset a 7.5 percent drop in Class A sales. The increase in February motorhome sales was driven by a huge jump in rentals, almost all Class C.

For the year, Class A and C sales are up 12.7 percent over the 2011 pace.

Thor Industries Inc. retained its No. 1 rank among all motorhome builders with a 33.3 percent market share. Winnebago Industries Inc. was a distant second with a 17.2 percent share.

Winnebago was No. 1 in Class sales with a 21.8 percent share, while Thor was the Class C leader with a commanding 49.2 percent share.

In a separate report from SSI, Class B sales rose 29.3 percent in February over February 2011. Roadtrek Motorhomes Inc. was the Class B leader with a 39.2 percent market share.

Class B sales are up 7.2 percent for this year over the 2011 pace.
