Report: Towable RV Sales Rose 12.3% in March

Retail sales of towable RVs increased 12.3 percent in March over March 2011, Statistical Surveys Inc. (SSI) has reported.

The performance puts year-to-date sales ahead of the 2011 pace by 8.9 percent.

Travel trailer sales paced the surge, gaining 17.4 percent in March ahead of a year earlier. Year-to-date sales for these products are  up 14.2 percent.

Sales for other product segments were as follows:

  • Fifth-wheel sales increased 7.2 percent in March and 3.4 percent for the first quarter.
  • Folding camping trailer sales fell 14.9 percent in March and 17.7 percent for the first quarter.
  • Recreational park trailer (RPT) or park model sales plummeted 25.9 percent in March and 24.7 percent for the first quarter.

Thor Industries Inc. was the towable sales leader year-to-date with a 37.1 percent market share, followed by Forest River Inc. at 20.6 percent and Jayco Inc. with an 11.2 percent share.

Thor, parent company of Breckenridge, was the No. 1 RPT builder, posting a 23.2 percent market share. Skyline Corp. was No. 2 at 10.2 percent and Kropf Manufacturing Co. Inc. was third at 7.9 percent.
