The Sullivan County Commission denied a request to rezone a residential piece of land next to Boone Lake in Piney Flats, in eastern Tennessee, where the property owner wants to build a 20-site campground.

The Bamman family owns the property and lives in Rogersville, Tenn. Barbara Bamman said she and her husband are planning a high-end campground that would be similar to a gated residential community, reported

“We believe that the property is perfect for what we have in mind,” she said.

She said the campground would not allow alcohol and would be family friendly.

“We have put a lot of thought and detail” into the project, Bamman said.

Neighbors Oppose Plan

Neighbors along Sportsman Dock Road oppose the project. They say the small, single-lane road could not accommodate the increased traffic from the campground.

“There are already safety issues on this road,” neighbor Sharon Cole said.

The neighbors circulated a petition opposing the rezoning that was signed by 250 people. They believe the campground would decrease property values and impact the quality of life for residents.

“The prudent thing is to be considerate of the people who have lived there for a long time,” resident Leon Hood said.

Commissioner Dwight King, of Piney Flats, said he looked at the property and the road is a major problem. The single-lane road is a dead end and there is no place to turn around.

“We have serious problems with the way it is now,” King said.
