Campgrounds Near Daytona Speedway Ready for Holiday Race

Campgrounds near speedway still have vacancies for weekend.

With just 11 days to go until the Coke Zero 400 race at Daytona International Speedway in Florida, a local campground owner remains hopeful he will sell out the weekend, but may be biting his nails as race fans wait until the last minute to reserve a campsite.

Brian Dwyer runs three campgrounds with 800 sites in Daytona Beach. He expects two of his full-service KOA campgrounds to be 80 percent or 85 percent full for the race. But his other campground, the Racetrack RV Park across from turns 3 and 4 at the track, is not looking so good, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reported.

That park, which is opened only for special events and has water and electrical hookups only, will be lucky to be half-filled.

“We used to sell out and that doesn’t happen anymore,” Dwyer said.

Still, the summer is a slow time for North Florida campgrounds and any added boost from events is appreciated, Dwyer said.

This year’s 400 race is on a Saturday while the Fourth of July falls on the previous Wednesday.

Last year, the race was held on the Saturday two days before Independence Day — a perfect chance for race fans to schedule a three-day vacation weekend, area hoteliers said.
