For the third straight year, the Southern Ohio Golf Cart Rally will be staged at Walnut Creek Campground and Resort near Chillicothe, Ohio. The day-long competition on Saturday (June 23), which is open to both campers and the general public, is designed to put golf carts through some situations they’d never encounter during an 18-hole round, the Chillicothe Gazette reported.

“We started the rally due to the interest at the campgrounds in golf carts,” said Chuck Ferrell, of Walnut Creek Campground and Resort. “Most, if not all, of our seasonal campers have one or two golf carts, and we have 110 acres with lots of trails for our campers to use.”

What spawned from that initial interest are several events that never were envisioned by golf cart designers. Included among them are a creek run, mud bog, hill climb, obstacle race and the always humorous blind driver race.

Registration for the competitions starts at 8 a.m., with each event carrying a $5 entry fee and some featuring both stock and modified classes. The first event will begin around 11 a.m.

For those who’d just like to stop by and watch, there is a $2 per person spectator admission fee.

Activities tied to the rally begin Friday night. Before the carts are put through their endurance tests and slosh through the mud and water, they will be showcased in a 7 p.m. Friday social event called Show and Shine. The evening will feature a DJ and a golf cart show — similar to the car show cruise-ins so popular in the area — in which the carts will be displayed for people to browse through. The best-looking cart will get an award based on visitor votes.
