The Department of Natural Resources says reservations at Wisconsin State Park campgrounds are up almost 10 percent from last year.

But, building fires and roasting marshmallows aren't the only reasons campers are out on weekends.

"It’s close to home and affordable rather than a vacation far away or anything else this summer," said Dana Whitcome of Chippewa Falls.

Dana Whitcome says she went camping with her family to celebrate her husband and stepson's birthday and even decided to stay an extra day.

It’s at the Lake Wissota State Park that campers say they prefer state parks versus normal campgrounds.

"We've done state parks. We've done public campgrounds and we really feel state parks have a little more to offer for kids,” said Dan Milbrath of Hudson.

"It actually keeps it nice, it was nice and quiet here last night to get the kids to bed at a decent time," said Whitcome.

"I like state parks more you tend to see their cleaner and friendlier. A lot more to do at state parks learning more about nature," said Jacob Reidenbach of Hudson.

Jacob Reidenbach says it’s a tradition to camp with the Milbrath family and everyone loves the time they get to spend together.

"Love fishing, camping and going to the beach, walking on the state trails," said Reidenbach.

Lake Wissota officials say the campgrounds have been full most weekends. Meanwhile DNR officials say that walk-in campers have jumped 80 percent from last year and that electrified campsites, like Lake Wissota, are in high demand as well.

"We would have the electric, but we have an optimum battery to run our camper,” said Whitcome.
