Iowa Campground Expecting a Record Season
It’s been a big year for the recently renovated MacNider Campgrounds in Mason City, Iowa, with campers coming from all over the country as well as England and Australia.
“Let’s see, we’ve had them from Alaska, Washington, Oregon, North Carolina,” said Karen Anderson, who didn’t stop until she had named about 20 states.
The Globe Gazette reported that Brian Pauly, the city’s recreation director, said final numbers aren’t in yet but he’s projecting a record turnout.
Pauly said a national RV Internet blog contains travelers’ reviews of campgrounds. The MacNider Campground got four “stellar” ratings from visitors.
“We’ve got a good product here and people are taking a look and talking about it,” he said.
Anderson and her husband, Larry, took over management of the campground this year. She doesn’t take any of the credit for the uptick in business.
“It’s Mason City, if you want to know the truth,” she said Wednesday. “It’s the new hotel and everything else Mason City has to offer.”
Anderson gives campers a Chamber of Commerce brochure when they arrive.
"They may come because they’ve heard about the hotel but they love all the other things to do,” she said. “The walking trails, The Music Man Square, the museum …”
Anderson said a recent camper from Chicago was told by a friend to stop in Mason City so he could see the Historic Park Inn Hotel.
“He was only going to stay one night but he stayed for four because of all the things he wanted to see,” said Anderson.
