N. Y. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced today (Nov. 28) that state park pass sales reached a record high during Empire Passport’s Cyber Monday promotion, Albany Watch reported.

The state office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation sold 22,636 Empire Passports, a 5,000% increase compared to Cyber Monday sales last year. Last year, 443 Empire Passports were sold on Cyber Monday.

“This year’s Cyber Monday sales of the Empire Passport prove that New York’s state parks and recreational facilities are some of the most popular attractions in the Empire State,” Cuomo said in a statement.

The park passes provide people with access to state parks, use of their facilities all season and unlimited vehicle entries during the day.

Empire Passports are valid for one year, starting on April 1 until March 31, 2014.

Empire Passports are normally $65 but sold for $40 during the Cyber Monday deal.

The passes sold totaled $905,440 in revenue and reflect 27% of Empire Passports sold in 2011.

The state parks system is the oldest in the country, with 179 state parks and 35 historic sites. They are visited by 58 million people annually.
