‘A’ Grade Puts Shadow Hills RV Resort in Top 2%
Editor’s Note: Following is a news release about Shadow Hills RV Resort located in Indio, Calif.
Shadow Hills RV Resort was one of 42 campgrounds, RV parks and resorts across the country to earn an all around “A” grade in the fifth annual GuestRated satisfaction survey of independent parks.
This 120-site park received an “A” grade in overall guest satisfaction for the year 2012. The top-rated parks were announced at the Rio All Suites Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas during a Nov. 30th awards ceremony hosted by the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (ARVC).
More than 30,000 camping and RV enthusiasts completed reviews in the GuestRated.com online survey, grading their experiences at 3,200 independent RV parks and campgrounds.
“Consistently earning an overall ‘A’ grade from guests is difficult, and our 42 winners this year represent less than 2% of all of the nation’s campgrounds.” said Bob MacKinnon, president and CEO of GuestRated.com, the Murrieta, Calif.-based company that conducted the online survey on behalf of ARVC.
Shadow Hills RV Resort provides its guests with a variety of amenities not typically found in RV resorts. Overnight guests are treated to fresh baked Otis Spunkmeyer cookies, which they receive upon check-in, while long-term guests are given a special gift that they can enjoy during their stay.
“These are the kinds of things that can bring a smile to a guest upon check-in,” said Paula Turner, who co-owns the resort with her husband, David.
Shadow Hills also provides its guests with luxurious country club-style restrooms that are fully stocked with shaver kits as well as oral hygiene and skin care products.
“In every part of the resort, we try to provide very good customer service,” Turner said. “But it takes a lot of staffing to do that. We could not provide good customer service without an exceptional team.”
Indeed, when the Turners purchased the resort seven years ago, it had only two employees. Today, the resort has as many as 15 working during the peak winter season.
The Turners have also invested more than $500,000 in improvements, which include paving and reconfiguring their RV sites to accommodate today’s largest rigs with slideouts. They have also installed a solar-heated, salt water swimming pool.
New improvements planned for this winter include construction of a covered area by the swimming pool for outdoor massages and installation of more lighting by the park’s pond and fire pit to better accommodate outdoor activities.
While the Turners have developed many of their own ideas for park improvements, they have also used consumer survey feedback from GuestRated.com to guide their efforts. “The surveys have enabled us to assess where where we exceed expectations while also helping us focus on other aspects of the park where improvements are needed,” Turner said.
These improvements, combined with the Turners’ focus on customer service and input from guest reviews, have paid off.
Shadow Hills is fully booked with snowbirds through March. After that, the resort fills up with teenagers, 20-somethings and young-at-heart travelers from around the world who come to Indio to attend the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and Stagecoach, one of the largest country music festivals in the country. Both events take place in April.
The GuestRated national online review program was launched in 2008 in collaboration with ARVC.
