Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels has covered a lot of ground during his years in office, with most of the traveling being done in an RV, WNDU-TV, South Bend, Ind., reported.

Now, he is handing over the keys to what has become known as “RV-1.”

Daniels made the trip from Indianapolis to Elkhart on Wednesday (Dec. 19) to drop off the vehicle at the RV/MH Hall of Fame. Since 2004, Daniels has travelled to every county in Indiana.

RV-1 illustrates just how many stops have been made along the way with the thousands of signatures left by people Daniels has met on the road.

“Every signature has memory attached to it,” Daniels said. “It gave people a sense of ownership and involvement.”

The many miles logged came with a few bumps in the road. The RV has survived losing its air conditioning unit while going under an overpass, getting stuck in a courthouse parking lot and meeting many interesting characters along the way, Daniels said.

Wednesday brought some bittersweet feelings to those that spent many hours on board.

“There is a bit of nostalgia with the fact that this is the last time we are actually in it on the road,” said Ben Ledo, who drove the RV during Daniels’ campaign.

Daniels donated the RV to the Indiana State Museum but it will on display at the RV Hall of Fame in Elkhart.

“I think this vehicle has become a little piece Indiana history,” Daniels said.
