Publisher’s Note: In an effort to “stir the pot” in terms of public discourse and upgrade the “Crackerbarrel” column in our monthly print issues, Woodall’s Campground Management is planning to periodically pose questions on WOODALLSCM.com to find out what park operators and others in the RV park and campground arena think about an array of issues. The following item, based on a recent WOODALLSCM.com headline news posting (“Va. Report Probes State vs. Private Parks Issue”), brings to mind a long-held view by some in the industry that public parks often don’t play ball by the same rules as private operators. In this, our first Internet-based Crackerbarrel question, we’d like to find out what you think. Please respond by Tuesday, Jan. 22Thanks for your consideration. Sherman Goldenberg

“Do state park campgrounds unfairly compete with private campgrounds? A bill in last year’s Virginia General Assembly suggests the answer might be yes, but a new study says no. According to a report by Fredericksburg.com, the state’s Board of Conservation and Recreation, which oversees state parks, last fall commissioned Virginia Tech’s Pamplin College of Business to do a report on what motivates campers to choose where to camp. The report suggests that campers make choices based on a variety of factors, but that the price of a campsite does not rank highly as a factor that drives a camper’s choice. It also says that the more camping amenities there are in an area, the more likely it is that people will visit that area to camp. The report has been posted on the website of the Virginia Association for Parks, an organization that covers various state park support groups and opposed legislation in last year’s General Assembly that would have limited public parks’ offerings…” So, here’s the question:

Do you think that public park competition is still an issue in the RV park & campground business or have those days passed?
