Good eats and spirits at first festival.

People like to enjoy good food and wine when they travel.

But camping and RVing enthusiasts who stay at Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground in Buellton, Calif., on March 17 will have an incredible variety of food and wine onsite as the resort hosts the first Buellton Wine & Chili Festival, according to a news release.

Guests who participate in the day-long event will help decide which restaurant has the best red chili, the best chili verde and the best salsa. They’ll also decide which wineries have the best red and white wines.

“We’re already receiving a lot of inquiries and reservations for the festival weekend,” said Dan Baumann, general manager of Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground.

Tickets to the Buellton Wine & Chili Festival include an oak barbecue lunch, a souvenir wine glass, unlimited wine tastings as well as live entertainment. Special tickets will also be available for guests under 21 who want to sample the chili, talk to the chefs and participate in the Santa Ynez Valley’s first wine and chili festival.

Competing restaurants include Avant Tapas & Wines, Flying Flags Cafe, Hitching Post Restaurant, Standing Sun Winery and Willows Steaks & Seafood, while the list of competing wineries includes Ampelos, Falcone Family Vineyards, Hitching Post Wines, Jalama Wines, Kessler Haak, Lucas & Lewellan, Terravant Wine Co. and Zotovich Cellars.

Campground hosts new festival

“More restaurants and wineries are joining the event every day, so we expect the chili and wine tasting competitions to be pretty intense,” Baumann said.

While hosting the Buellton Wine & Chile Festival is a first for Flying Flags, the resort has been actively promoting restaurants and wineries across the Santa Ynez Valley for many years.

Flying Flags has also developed an activities program that includes Friday night Tri-Tip barbecues, Saturday night ice cream socials, dive-in movies under the stars, which guests can watch while enjoying the park’s swimming pool and Jacuzzi, as well as Sunday breakfast in bed delivery service. Golf and wine tasting packages are also available. The park also offers wine tasting events, featuring local wineries that come to the RV resort on weekends.

“The wine tasting events are particularly popular with families because it enables the parents to sample local wines while their children enjoy our swimming pool or other park activities,” Baumann said.

Flying Flags RV Resort is affiliated with the California Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds, which hosts a travel planning website at

How smart! Partnering with local businesses and gaining exposure for your campground to potential new campers…all at the same time. Everyone wins in this scenario. Always smart to market to the local community first, especially in today’s economy with people not traveling as far for their vacations.
