Campers visiting the Paint Creek State Park campground in southwest Ohio got quite a scare when they woke up Sunday morning (Aug. 18), the Fayette Advocate, Washington Court House, reported.

The Ross County Sheriff’s office reports that they were called to the campground outside of Bainbridge in reference to a suspicious package shortly before 10 a.m.

A camper found a plastic pipe near their campsite and took it the campground’s store where police were notified after park officials believed the item was an explosive.

“Deputies arrived on the scene and found it to be a metal cylinder approximately 12 inches long with caps on both ends,” said Ross County Sheriff George Lavender.

Lavender’s deputies immediately dispatched their explosives detection K-9 “Ilka,” along with her handler, Deputy Rick Torchick, who conducted an initial sweep of the campground to ensure the safety of the campers.

The Columbus Fire Bomb Squad was requested to the scene and detonated the bomb.

The device was taken into evidence and will be sent to the laboratory for testing, according to Lavender.

Two checkpoints were set up in the campground and all campers leaving the state park had their vehicles searched by deputies and bomb-sniffing dogs; pictures were taken of all vehicles and their VIN numbers were logged.

Lavender said that his deputies and the dogs will sweep the campground before clearing the scene in an attempt to find other bombs.
