As many of you may have read by now, the industry has lost one of its most fun loving generous leaders. Dick Hartford, founder of Evergreen USA passed away last week at age 68. Click here to read his obituary.
His generosity to, and support of, this industry cannot be surpassed. In a letter from CalARVC (then known as CTPA) nominating Dick for ARVC’s Stan Martin Award his years of giving to this industry are outlined. Read the nomination letter here>
What most don’t know is how Dick helped stabilize the campground insurance market for the entire country. In the early 1980s, campgrounds found themselves less and less able to buy liability insurance. Many went without any insurance at all for several years. Dick’s insurance agency lost its underwriter and found very little options for campgrounds. Dick, along with 25 campground owners, took the bull by the horns and formed Evergreen Indemnity, an insurance company owned by, and for, campgrounds.
Today, Evergreen USA is a leader in the campground insurance industry and by its sheer existence has helped create a stable competitive insurance market for campgrounds and RV parks throughout the country for the last 30 years. Click here to read more about the history of Evergeen USA>
To Dick’s family and the staff at Evergreen USA, our condolences from the CalARVC staff, Tug and Judy Miller, our Board of Directors, and every campground and RV park in California.
