Parks Fee Input Deadline Looms for W.Va.

Time is running out for the public to comment on a proposal to charge fees at three free campgrounds in the New River Gorge National River near Prince, W. Va., the Associated Press reported.

The National Park Service says the public comment period runs through Sunday.

Visitors would pay $5 per night to use the Army Camp, Glade Creek and Grandview Sandbar campgrounds near Prince. All three campgrounds have limited amenities.

The park service cites two reasons for the proposal — finances and crime.

According to the park service, there have been numerous visitor complaints and incidents in the campgrounds, including domestic disputes and alcohol-related crime. Similar issues at other comparable campgrounds in the national park system declined after nominal fees were implemented.
