Ryan Kernosky took his summer job as on-site manager of Collins Park expecting to spend some weekends lounging around the park and enjoying the great outdoors.

Instead, even on weekends that typically were slow in past years, the county campground and lake on Highway I in Rosholt, Wis., were packed with campers, picnickers, swimmers, boaters and anglers, the Stevens Point Journal reported.

Despite a snowy and cold spring weather that left the Portage County Parks Department with little time to get parks up and running, and fee increases for the first time in four years, campgrounds this summer saw an increase of more than 10% in revenue from the previous year. In 2012, Portage County brought in $245,888 from campgrounds at Jordan, Collins, DuBay and Lake Emily parks, all generated by camping fees, lodge rentals, firewood sales, dump station fees, and soda and ice sales.

Kernosky, 21, was the onsite manager for Collins Park, 2711 County Road I in Rosholt, from May 15 to Sept. 30 while the 27-site campground was open for the season.
