Wis. Raceway Adding Full Campground
Dells Raceway Park might have a campground as part of its facilities in the near future.
The Lyndon (Wis.) Town Board approved a conditional zoning change to business for land bordering the Dells Raceway Park at its monthly meeting Thursday, the Reedsburg Times-Press reported. The Lyndon Plan Commission approved the zoning change at the meeting held directly before the board meeting, after an initial proposal was presented by Wayne Lensing, owner.
Plans for the campground are in the early stages; this was the first step Lensing has taken. He will work on getting permits for the camping over the winter, he said. Campgrounds will be installed, but the scope and layout will not be determined until an engineer is brought in to draw up plans, he added.
People have parked overnight at the racetrack for more than 40 years, but trouble occurred when the track advertised free overnight camping, Lensing said. Publicizing free camping caught the attention of the state who realized that the park had no permits for any kind of camping. Because he would need to go ahead and work on permits anyway, Lensing decided to go all out and have a campground installed, he said.
The 20-acre area will also hold a place for overflow car parking from the track. Many times such a large crowd shows up at the track that some are forced to park on the street. That makes the road very narrow, Lensing said. The overflow parking should relieve those concerns.
