Ocean Lakes Family Campground in Myrtle Beach, S.C., will host its 13th Annual Polar Bear Plunge Dec. 31 at 3 p.m.

The polar bear plunge is a winter tradition that has its U.S. origin at Coney Island in 1903. Ocean Lakes’ first polar bear plunge began with three people taking a dip in the Atlantic Ocean in 1999, and it has since grown to attract nearly 300 participants and hundreds of spectators.

Ocean Lakes asks each polar plunge participant to donate a nonperishable food item. Their donations signal the beginning of Ocean Lakes’ year-long efforts to collect and donate nonperishable items to local food banks most in need.

Ocean Lakes sets up food collection centers around the campground, and its teammates sort, package and deliver the food items to the local food banks throughout the year.
