Their faces just light up when they see the quilts waiting for them.

It’s that reaction that keeps Audrey Oetting, 63, making quilts every year for children at Stuart Place Elementary School in Harlingen, Texas, the Valley Morning Star reported.

Oetting and other members of the Lakewood RV Resort Quilting Team have been working steadily on the quilts for several months. It’s part of the park’s annual Christmas for the Needy project, which will include Christmas presents and groceries.

Donna Wright, the chairwoman for the park’s Christmas for the Needy program, said Lakewood has been doing this for more than 20 years. The park at 4525 Graham Road has a mentoring program with Stuart Place Elementary School where park residents, some of them former teachers, help children with their school work.

“The school knows which are the needy families and those are the ones that they provide for us to sponsor,” she said.

To sponsor the families, park residents have fundraisers so they can buy groceries and gifts, plus the quilts.
