A former RV park that was to be converted to a condo-hotel in the Florida Keys has been empty since the concept never caught on, but the site may become a boutique hotel, according to the Keys Reporter.

The sun-bleached signs for the Playa Cristal in Key Largo show the failure — not enough of the planned 92 high-end units sold and the developer went belly-up, leading to a $40 million foreclosure lawsuit

Developers have purchased the 14-acre bayfront site, once home to the American Outdoors RV Park, and plan a 15-building hotel and 160 parking spaces under the banner of Marriott’s Autograph Collection.
