When he is not spending time at Sunshine RV Resort, Harold Carlson, 81, of Minnesota plays pickleball. Many Winter Texans are discovering the sport, and meet weekly to play several matches at the Harlingen, Texas, Community Center, according to the Valley Morning Star.

Pickleball has nothing to do with midget gherkins or kosher dill spears.

It is a combination of ping-pong, badminton and tennis, and it’s a popular activity at local RV parks in the Rio Grande Valley.

And it’s becoming more popular.

Beverly McIntosh, the United States Pickleball Association ambassador for Harlingen, said pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the nation.

On Tuesday, 21 players, with a range of skills and ages, gathered at the Harlingen Community Center to play pickleball.

McIntosh, originally from Michigan, has played the sport for more than a year and said she plays as often as she can.

One might say she relishes the sport.
