A group of Indiana residents are pushing to have the state reopen a campground that was closed 10 months ago.

According to a letter published in the News and Tribune of Jeffersonville and New Albany, Ind., the group started a Facebook page and a petition on to try to convince Indiana officials to reopen Stage Stop Campground in Harrison/Crawford State Forest.

In the letter, Sharon Byerly wrote, “This popular campground along beautiful Blue River has been a favorite of outdoorsmen for years.

“We are being told that it is highly unlikely that the campground will reopen for the foreseeable future. This is unacceptable.

“We are being told that the reason for this action is due to water leaks and substandard pit toilets. What maintenance and improvements have been made in the last 30 years?

“For years, this campground has been treated as the ugly stepchild. The DNR (Indiana Department of Natural Resources) has been neglectful in paying child support. This is not acceptable.”
