The new ownership of Shenandoah Acres Family Campground plans to advertise as the summer season approaches, but an owner told supportive members of the county zoning board that word-of-mouth has been a strong publicity start for the Stuarts Draft, Va.,  resort, the News Leader of Staunton reported.

Garland Eutsler has been working on the deal to buy the 134-acre recreational area and spring-fed lake that hosted generations of visitors. He’s been preparing to open the campground March 28. If all goes as planned, the lake and resort lodges will open on May 23 for the first time in about a decade, Eutsler told members of the county zoning board on Thursday (March 6).

Nearly 3,700 people follow updates on the iconic site’s renovation on Facebook, many eager to visit the place they and their parents did as children, he said.

“The place is legendary,” Eutsler said after the hearing for his permit application. “We like our chances. We know that if we take care of the people, the people will come.”

He told the zoning board that loud noise would cease by 10:30 p.m. “We’re going to be a family campground — that’s just the way it’s gonna be,” he said. “Now we might go broke, but we’re gonna be a family campground.”
