County May Open Closed Corps Campground

A closed campground in the Ozarks of Missouri may get a new life with the help of a local county commission, television station KSPR reported.

The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers closed the Viney Creek Campground near Golden after funding for the area was cut by $500,000. Now, Barry County Commissioners are taking steps to reopen the campground, possibly by hiring a private company to operate it.

The commission approached the corps about leasing the area, then subleasing to a management company that would re-open the camp and operate it for residents and other visitors. The corps says the camp is currently closed for the off-season and it has no plans to reopen it.

Before it could move forward with Barry County, the corps must first make sure there is no interest at the federal or state level or any interest from an Indian tribe. Then negotiations could take place with the county.
