The state of Michigan will ask the South Haven Area Recreation Authority to manage the state’s new campground along the Black River in South Haven Township when it opens next year, the Herald-Palladium of St. Joseph and Benton Harbor reported.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources recently bought the 58-acre former Riverwoods development site off Blue Star Highway for $830,000.

The site has city water, sewer and electric service available, but the former owners never built any of the planned houses there. It cost $4 million to install the infrastructure.

The DNR’s Paul Yauk said the campground will have sites specifically for recreational vehicles, but there will likely be a rustic camp area, too. The site is along the state’s Kal-Haven Trail.

This will be the first state campground situated along such a trail, Yauk said.

There is no timeline for developing the campground, but Yauk said it’s likely to open in 2015.
