Plans for Upscale Campground Move Ahead
Refined plans that look to develop the 32-acre Harbor Terrace property into a full-scale campground overlooking California’s San Luis Bay have been submitted to the county and the environmental review process is underway.
The Santa Maria Times reported that the Port San Luis Harbor Commission also recently voted to contract with a developer/operator to take on the project, and requests for proposals for a contract are currently being drafted and will be circulated in the coming weeks, said Harbor Manager Steve McGrath.
The Harbor Terrace property sits above Avila Beach Drive, just east of the entrance to Diablo Canyon Power Plant, and was acquired by the Harbor District in 1984.
Home to a small trailer park for more than 25 years, commissioners voted to close the aged facility in 2012 and started the steps to develop the site into a resort-like campground. The park is now completely vacant, except for a small area on the bottom terrace that’s currently used for RV camping.
