S.D. State Campground Reservations Opening

Campers can begin to make reservations at state campgrounds and parks this weekend, according to a statement from South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, the Rapid City Journal reported.

Starting Saturday (Feb. 18), campers can make reservations for a Friday, May 19, arrival.

Dates to reserve spots in campgrounds will follow in succession and become available 90 days before arrival. Custer State Park makes reservations one year in advance, but 40 other state parks work on the 90-day schedule.

“The sooner you plan your camping trip, the better,” state parks Director Katie Ceroll said in the statement. “We had a record number of campers at our parks last year, and campsites at popular parks go quickly.”

Campsites become available 6 a.m. on the first day of the 90-day window, but reservations can be made until the day a camper arrives. A full schedule is available at gfp.sd.gov.
