Llano Grande Resort and Country Club has won the “Park of the Year” and “Accommodations of the Year” awards in the large park category from the Texas Association of Campground Owners (TACO).

The 300-acre, 1,134-site park includes pull-through RV sites as well as sites for park model RVs and manufactured homes, according to an announcement from TACO. The park also rents 10 apartments and 19 park model RVs.

“We are thrilled to have statewide recognition with these two awards,” said Karen Pike, who manages the 55-and-over resort on behalf of The Hynes Group of Vancouver, British Columbia, which owns the resort.

Pike said the resort staff has worked hard to make Llano Grande a top notch resort. “We take really good care of our property,” she said. “Our owners spare no expense in keeping things up and making sure our residents are well taken care of.”

The park has also made huge strides to increase its entertainment offering. “It used to be that everybody volunteered. But the new generation wants to be entertained,” Pike said.

Llano Grande responded to guest interest in entertainment by building The Hynes Event Center, a 25,000-square-foot facility for concerts, dinner shows, dances, weddings, quinceañeras, conventions and other special events.

The center has concert-style seating for 1,100 and can host dinner shows for 750.

The resort also has an 18-hole championship golf course and an onsite cafe that offers breakfast and lunch as well as Karaoke on Wednesday nights and fish fries on Friday nights.

Like many resorts in the Rio Grande Valley, Llano Grande suffered a downturn in its Winter Texan business a few years when there was media publicity about violence near the Mexican border. But business has bounced back the past couple of years.

“Last year,” Pike said, “business for us was up about 20 percent over the previous year. This year, we were completely full with a waiting list. That hadn’t happened since 2008.”

Llano Grande Resort and Country Club caters to Winter Texans, most of whom stay at the resort between November and March. For more information about the resort, visit
