Texas Campground Reopened After Fire Burns Out

Big Bend National Park staff members reopened the popular Chisos Basin campground Thursday (May 18) as a wildfire in the park continued to smolder out, MySanAntonio.com reported.

The U.S.  National Park Service closed the campground this week after a fire sparked in Juniper Canyon on Sunday spread to around 1,000 acres. The NPS reported that fire crews had 89 percent of its perimeter under control by Wednesday with some crews beginning to return home. The Chisos Basin was reopened that day and the campground on Thursday.

The fire never directly threatened the campground and visitors’ center. Both were closed for use as a staging area and for brush clearing.
