TACO Recognizes Texas Parks During Meeting

West Gate RV Park

Editor’s Note: During their spring meeting April 22-24 in Montgomery, Texas, the Texas Association of Campground Owners (TACO) recognized several parks with awards.

Below are the award winners, according to a press release, and a slight description of their parks:

WEST GATE RV PARK

For the second time in as many years, West Gate RV Park in Poolville, has received the Small Park of the Year award.

“We’re very pleased to have received this recognition again,” said Beth Carroll, whose family purchased the park in 2015 and continues to make investments to improve the park’s aesthetic appeal.

The improvements include the installation of hail-proof shade covers over 20 of the park’s 50 campsites, as well as improvements to the park’s restroom facilities and club house. The Carroll family has also planted new landscaping and installed a flag post next to the entrance to the park.

“With these improvements we’re definitely seeing more business,” Carroll said, adding that guests also appreciate how her family manages the park. “The feedback we’ve gotten so far is that this is a peaceful, quiet and very clean park.”

West Gate RV Park has a diversified customer base that includes clubs and rally groups, as well as people who work various jobs in the area.

The park has received 8-9-8 ratings from the Good Sam RV Travel Guide & Campground Directory and offers a 10% discount to Good Sam, as well as TACO members. For more information about West Gate RV Park, please visit www.westgatervparktexas.com.

Beacon 44 RV Park

Beacon 44 RV Park in Port O’Connor, won the Park of the Year award in the medium size park category.

“We’re thrilled to receive this recognition,” said Mary Jo Walker, who co-owns and operates the park with her husband, Doug.

The Walkers are not only involved in the campground business. They also own and operate Beacon 44 Seafood Market, which carries roughly 30 different types of seafood items, including fresh shrimp caught from their boat, as well as stuffed crab, crab stuffed shrimp and crab stuffed jalapeños to name a few of our delicious items.

But while their seafood market has been successful, the Walkers knew they needed another source of income for their retirement years, so 20 years ago they opened a 7-site campground called Beacon 44 RV Park, which caters to fishing enthusiasts from Houston, Austin and San Antonio.

The Walkers have continued to expand their campground, which now has 63 sites, a 1,200-square foot club house and a one-acre fishing pond stocked with catfish, bass and perch.

“Business has been excellent,” Mary Jo Walker said, noting that Port O’Connor is a popular location for fishing enthusiasts. We will be adding 11 short term sights in the next year.”

Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp-Resort in Canyon Lake

The Jellystone Park in Canyon Lake, won the Accommodations of the Year Award in the large park category.

“This is a nice win for us,” said Zachary Bossenbroek, CEO of Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Northgate Resorts, which owns and operates eight other Jellystone Parks across the country, including the Canyon Lake park, which was recently named on TripAdvisor’s list of the top 25 hotels for families in the United States.

The Jellystone Park in Canyon Lake features 79 RV sites, 34 tent sites and 61 rental cabins and cottages, including a Yogi Bear Bunkhouse, which can sleep up to 16, and a Boo Boo Bungalow, which can sleep up to 14.

The park offers a wide selection of cabins that can sleep up to 10, including loft units, as well as smaller cottages and cabins that can sleep up to four. Each unit has kitchen and bathroom facilities. Most of them also have an outdoor picnic table, charcoal grill and fire ring.

“This location truly has cabins for every kind of camper,” Bossenbroek said. “Whether you’re looking for rustic, luxury or group accommodations, there is something for everyone. Every cabin is nestled perfectly among the oak and pine trees of the Texas Hill Country, giving it a very cozy, welcoming feel where you can just kick back and relax in nature.”

Additional park improvements are also underway this year, including construction of six new “Red Carpet RV Sites,” four new Hill Country Cabins and a new playground.

These improvements complement a variety of onsite amenities, including an interactive water playground, a swimming pool and splash pad, an indoor heated pool, lazer tag, disc golf, a jumping pillow, a gem mining sluice and a GaGa ball pit, as well as basketball, volleyball and horseshoe courts.

Jellystone Park Guadalupe River won Park of the Year Award in the large park category.

Waterpark at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp-Resort in Kerrville, Texas

“We are very pleased to receive this statewide recognition as we continue our efforts to build Jellystone Park Guadalupe into one of the top campgrounds in Texas,” said Bossenbroek, Northgate acquired the Kerrville resort in late 2015 and converted it into a Jellystone Park in 2016.

Located along the banks of the Guadalupe River, the park features 178 RV sites as well as 72 furnished cabins and cottages, including 13 new Boo Boo Bungalows and 10 new Hill Country Cottages.

Last year, Northgate also equipped the park with a 19,641-square-foot water zone. It includes three water slides that are 20-feet, 160-feet and 165-feet long; two kiddie water slides; two water cannons; 13 water blasters; and a 750-gallon hydro storm, an elevated water tank that periodically dumps its contents on anyone who happens to be underneath it.

Northgate is currently expanding the water zone with four new water slides, one of which is a racer with two lanes. The new slides, which will open this summer, will be 196-feet, 242-feet, and 334-feet-long. Northgate is also renovating one of the park’s restaurants, the River Rock Pub & Pizzeria. The pub complements the 32-seat Cartoon Cafe, which features kid-friendly meals such as chicken tenders and hamburgers.

All of these improvements complement a growing array of onsite activities, including a gem mining sluice, miniature golf course, a gaga ball pit and laser tag, and an expanded activity schedule.
