A record 15,000-plus people attended the 29th Annual Fall Detroit RV & Camping Show, hosted Oct. 3-7 by the Michigan Association of Recreation Vehicles and Campgrounds (MARVAC) at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi.

The final gate attendance represents a 3% increase over last year’s show, which was a record crowd over the previous year, said Darren Ing, director of MARVAC RV and camping shows.

“It was a good show, and the attendance really speaks to the fact that we’re still seeing that trend of strong consumer demand for the RV lifestyle,” Ing told “Consumer confidence is still strong and the economy is still going well, but it’s more than that. The work by the national Go RVing campaign and the work that we do here at MARVAC to spread the good word about the RV lifestyle is paying dividends. People are looking to make memories, and RVing and camping allows them to do exactly that.”

Another factor pumping up attendance this year’s show was the venue’s expanded exhibit space. The Suburban Collection Showplace recently completed a 90,000-square-foot expansion, which not only accommodated more than 360 RVs on display at the show, but allowed for better traffic flow as well.

“The consumer aisles were wider and, just as important, the dealer aisles were wider. Dealers told me they appreciated having more space because they didn’t feel like they were crowded and could take their time with the consumers and not feel rushed,” Ing explained, adding that for the most part dealers reported steady sales.

The show also featured more than four dozen exhibitors, including campgrounds and RV parks, parts and accessories retailers, on-site RV financial lenders, and RV rental operators, as well as several informative seminars.
