Sue Bray

With the new year, Good Sam’s well known, longtime executive, Sue Bray, is escalating her consulting business, Sue Bray Consulting, www.suebray.com.

As a consultant, the California-based Bray will be utilizing her expertise and experience in marketing and developing association membership benefits and producing events, according to a news release.

Bray’s involvement with the Good Sam Club began when she was hired as chapter activities director more than 30 years ago. Shortly thereafter, she was named vice president and executive director of the club. During her tenure, the organization grew from less than 200,000 members to more than 1 million member families.

She spent most of her career with Good Sam developing partnerships and benefits for members, including the popular trip routing service, an RV financing program, a member credit card, and was deeply involved in the design and launch of the club’s highly regarded emergency road service.

Bray was instrumental in designing and developing many of the Good Sam member benefits and activities, including the Standby Sams volunteer network and discount partnerships for the club’s Smile & Save program.

She managed club members’ participation in several major charity initiatives, including Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, Dogs for the Deaf and Hole in the Wall Camps. She also represented RV consumers at federal, state and local levels, forging several major RV legislative issues.

In 2009, Sue was inducted into the RV Hall of Fame in Elkhard, Ind. – one of the youngest members and only the ninth woman selected for the RV industry’s most prestigious honor.

Sue Bray Consulting was formed in 2010, and companies utilizing Bray’s services include Equity Lifestyle Properties Inc., RVing Women, the Venice Beach House and the Good Sam Club. Most recently, Bray was charged with expanding the club’s Rally program from one annual event to three successful rallies held in 2012, hosting more than 20,000 Good Sam members.

Good Sam Launching ‘Project Good Samaritan’

October 10, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Good Sam announced that as part of its 2013 goal to foster corporate social responsibility it has launched a new employee-related initiative called “Project Good Samaritan” dedicated to its “mission of making our community a better place both as corporate citizens and for individual employees through a dedicated focus on philanthropy.”

According to a press release, the new initiative provides for the staff to volunteer eight hours of their work time a quarter to causes within their community that are meaningful to them.

“We believe that every corner of the organization, from the corporate office to our retail stores, call centers and RV dealerships across the U.S., our employees believe in our corporate responsibility, and will be excited to execute this program,” said Marcus Lemonis, chairman and CEO of Good Sam Enterprises LLC and Camping World Inc. “We’ve had an amazing year and are eager to give back and support charitable organizations. It occurred to us that we could have a greater impact and help more people in our communities by using our staff on an ongoing basis.”

Lemonis recently led by example with his participation on ABC’s “Secret Millionaire” this past summer. He returned to his hometown of Miami for a specific episode of “Secret Millionaire” where he worked with three charity organizations to help provide the resources for them to succeed.

Good Sam, along with its sister company, Camping World, currently employs approximately 5,000 associates and is the largest workforce in the outdoor and RV industries operating locations in 33 states.

“Good Sam and Camping World employees walk the talk when it comes to social responsibility and giving back to local communities,” said Zrinka Allen, executive vice president of human resources and social responsibility. “Our long term goal is to continue developing and promoting initiatives that keep the company and associates focused on giving back locally, consistent with the charter of the Good Sam Club in 1966 “people helping people.”

Lemonis Touts Private Campgrounds’ Role

Marcus Lemonis

Marcus Lemonis, chairman and CEO of Good Sam Enterprises LLC, says it’s important to recognize the crucial role played by private RV parks and campgrounds in ensuring that RV enthusiasts enjoy their travels.

In a letter published in the October issue of Highways, the official magazine of 1.3 million Good Sam members, Lemonis encourages members to “Get Out and Travel” and thoroughly enjoy North America’s campgrounds.

“The country’s campgrounds are an essential part of an enjoyable RV experience,” writes Lemonis. “It often escapes us that without them, our lifestyle would be more difficult to enjoy, it would be harder to see this great land and quite frankly less fun. These parks work tirelessly to be prepared and deliver a quality experience.”

Lemonis’ letter is underscored by a recent survey of 30,000 Good Sam members conducted by the University of Florida. The study revealed that Good Sam members look to private parks to deliver a safe, secure and quality camping experience. The survey also indicated that safety and security were ranked among the most important camping facility criteria, and 90 percent of members expressed that they are satisfied with the safety and security found at Good Sam Parks.

“Campgrounds are the backbone of what allows this industry to flourish,” adds Lemonis, “and sending our members to stay at quality RV parks and campgrounds is integral in delivering a great experience to our Good Sam members.”

About 2,000 privately owned and operated Good Sam Parks open their doors to RVers across North America. Lemonis wrote that these RV parks “have committed to delivering not only a high-quality experience but have assured me that they will always strive to make [RVers] happy.”

Good Sam Announces 2013 Rally Locations

July 25, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

The Good Sam Club today (July 25) announced the dates for the organization’s two scheduled rallies in 2013.

According to a press release, the first event will be held April 11-14 in Albuquerque, N.M., at the Balloon Fiesta Field, followed by a June 13-16 rally in Syracuse, N.Y., at the New York State Fair.

“Many club members and RV industry personnel have been asking about our 2013 Rally schedule,” said Marcus Lemonis, chairman and CEO of the Good Sam Club and Camping World Inc. “In 2012, we expanded our rally schedule to make the events accessible to more members. After the terrific response we got from both members and exhibitors at our 2012 Louisville Rally last month and at our Phoenix rally earlier this year, we determined that we would schedule two Rallies in 2013.”

Good Sam is still accepting reservations for the last of the three 2012 Rallies presented by DISH, to be held in Daytona, Fla., at the Daytona International Speedway, Nov. 2-4. Entertainment at the Daytona Rally will feature country superstar Reba McEntire and American Idol’s Katharine McPhee.

“With an exciting location like the Daytona International Speedway, the outstanding entertainment, not to mention all of the great rally activities, we are expecting a big turnout and a great time for all of our guests,” said Lemonis.

Good Sam Club Reports on Louisville RV Rally

July 18, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Good Sam Club and its members spread goodwill in Louisville.

The Good Sam Club and its members opened their hearts and their wallets for a number of worthy causes at the June 21-24 Good Sam Rally at Louisville’s Kentucky Exposition Center, an event that drew thousands of RVers in 2,033 recreational vehicles.

The collective outpouring of generosity resulted in nearly $10,000 from Good Sam members and $33,000 from the Good Sam Club itself, according to a news release. That’s in addition to the $54,973 raised by the club and its members for philanthropic organizations at the Good Sam Rally held March 22-25 at Arizona’s Phoenix International Raceway.

“The generosity of Good Sam Club members is amazing,” stated CEO Marcus Lemonis. “The Good Sam Club was started back in 1966 with the concept of our members helping others. It’s obvious that the concept is alive and well today.”

RVING ACCESSIBILITY GROUP

At the Louisville Good Sam Rally, Good Sam and Lemonis announced a $10,000 donation from the Good Sam Club to RVing Accessibility Group, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping physically challenged individuals experience the joy of RV travel. Mark Douglass, the group’s president, had been invited to the Rally to establish handicapped routes at the venue and communicate with Rally guests with special needs.

FLAGS4VETS

Good Sam members at the Louisville event contributed nearly $9,000 and the Good Sam Club donated another $10,000 to Flags4Vets, a group that places U.S. flags on military veterans’ graves. The combined contributions will purchase nearly 40,000 new flags for Flags4Vets, which has already placed flags on graves in 40 states. The director of Flags4Vets, Fred Moore, was on hand at the Rally to help organize the event’s Salute to Veterans: a parade, speakers and a reception honoring Rally-goers who served in the armed forces.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY AND NOMADS

The Good Sam Club’s fourth-annual RVers of the Year, Joyce and John Williams, were recognized at the Louisville Rally for their extraordinary service to their community and their country. While traveling in their RV, the Michigan Good Sam members have volunteered more than 2,000 hours a year since 1990 for many organizations, including Nomads on a Mission Active in Divine Service (NOMADS) and Habitat for Humanity and its RV Care-a-Vanners group. The Good Sam Club donated $13,000 to these two institutions in honor of the Williams, with $10,000 going to Habitat for Humanity and $3,000 to NOMADS.

DOGS FOR THE DEAF

Since 1980, Good Sam members and chapters have contributed to Dogs for the Deaf, an Oregon-based program that rescues dogs from animal shelters and trains them to assist people with a variety of challenges, from hearing loss to autism. The organization’s president, Robin Dickson, gratefully accepted $10,412 in donations from Good Sam members at the Louisville and Phoenix Good Sam Rallies, in addition to $45,000 donated by the Good Sam Club.

PROJECT LINUS

Good Sam members attending the Louisville Rally donated 268 handmade blankets, quilts and comforters to Project Linus, an altruistic organization that provides blankets — and a sense of security — to children who are ill or otherwise in need. Members contributed another 567 blankets to Project Linus at the March Rally.

METRO ANIMAL SERVICES

Louisville’s Metro Animal Services towed its mobile clinic and adoption trailer, SPOT (Stop Pet Overpopulation Today), to the Louisville Rally, full of adoptable dogs. Six of these dogs found loving homes with Good Sam members at the event.

Community service goes hand in hand with the Good Sam Club and Good Sam Rallies. Find out more about the Good Sam Club at GoodSamClub.com. Learn more about Good Sam Rallies at TheRally.com.

Camping World Set to Open 100th Store

June 21, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Camping World, the nation’s largest RV and outdoor retailer, today (June 21) announced that it is set to reach a milestone in the company’s history by opening its 100th RV superstore in the next several months.

“More than 46 years ago, Camping World opened its very first storefront location in Bowling Green, Ky., and to announce today’s milestone of projections to open our 100th store testifies to the continued, power of our brand, strength of the team and the loyalty of customers; which are all leading forces behind the growth of our business,”Marcus Lemonis, chairman and CEO of Camping World and Good Sam, stated in a news release.

The 100th store opening is indicative of Camping World’s disciplined and strategic growth strategy, in which the retailer continues to successfully grow the business and define itself as the clear leader in the RV and outdoor industry based on aggregate revenue, growth and market share.

Camping World along with its sister company Good Sam currently employs approximately 5,000 associates and is the largest workforce in the outdoor and RV industries operating locations in 33 states.

“As cliche as this sounds, I feel 100 percent confident to say that outside of our strong and loyal customer base, we’ve been blessed with the best associates in the industry, and they are the reason for our level of success,” said Lemonis.

“Roger Nuttall and Johnny Sirpilla, both 20-plus year industry veterans, have led our charge in the success and growth in our dealership and retail business, respectively,” continued Lemonis. “These two unit presidents have focused on fundamentals while taking the lead installing progressive processes and products.”

The Good Sam Club is the world’s largest organization of recreational vehicle owners and with their growth approaching 1.5 million members nationwide, the company feels the need to have a vast network of RV dealerships and retail stores to serve the RV community’s needs is essential.

“In my 26 years with Camping World it has been my vision to see the company flourish as it has,” said Mike Siemens, president of the Good Sam Club. “As our club continues to grow towards the 1.5 million-member milestone, our members are looking for better convenience and more value and it is our goal to deliver that.”

The Good Sam Club offers RVers the resources to make the most of the RV lifestyle, including significant savings on RV campgrounds, insurance, roadside assistance and extended service contracts.

“Our growth in the number of Good Sam Roadside Assistance and Extended Service Contract base has raised the expectations of our customers and they deserve an extensive network to service and repair their RV while enjoying the use of their trailer or coach,” remarked Lemonis.

Camping World announced these new stores coming in the following markets.

  • Cocoa Beach, Fla. – summer 2012.
  • Nashville, Tenn. – open late summer 2012.
  • Spokane, Wash. – late summer 2012.
  • Fresno, Calif. – January 2013.
  • Spring, Texas (North Houston) – summer 2013.
  • Erie, Pa. – spring 2013 Tucson, AZ – spring 2013.
  • Harrisburg, Pa. – summer 2013.
  • Fort Pierce, Fla. – fall 2013.

  • Clearwater, Fla. – fall 2013.
  • Ocala, Fla. – late fall 2012.
  • Denton, Texas – spring 2013.

The company has targeted about a dozen additional markets that will be announced soon and is in the final stages of acquiring them.

In a companion development today, Camping World announced that it has entered into definitive agreements to acquire Lee’s RV Superstore, an existing RV dealership in the Oklahoma City area. The location will be officially named Camping World of Oklahoma City and the acquisition closing is scheduled for the end of June.

The current RV dealership, located at 13111 N. Broadway Ext, intersection of Kilpatrick/Turner Turnpike I-44 & I-235, has served the Oklahoma City area for 34 years.

TACO Begins 2012 Camping Guide Distribution

January 9, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

TACO's 2012 guide cover

The Texas Association of Campground Owners (TACO) has begun to distribute 250,000 copies of the 2012 RV Travel & Camping Guide to Texas, a free, four-color glossy magazine that lists more than 350 campgrounds and RV resorts in Texas and surrounding states.

The 2012 guide, whose cover features a painting of a modern Class A motorhome in front of the Alamo, includes detailed information on campgrounds, RV parks and resorts, as well as old western style maps and prominent advertisements from Kampgrounds of America (KOA) and Trader’s Village, the largest flea market in Texas, according to a news release.

“We really have an eye-catching guide this year,” said Brian Schaeffer, executive director and CEO of the Crowley-based TACO, adding that the cover painting by Chris Snoddy of Burleson and the Western-style maps make the directory both fun and informative.

An initial batch of directories is being sent to campgrounds, RV parks, travel information centers and visitors bureaus across the state. Additional directories will be distributed at upcoming RV shows, including the All Valley RV Show, which takes place Jan. 12-14 in Mercedes; the Houston RV Show, which will be held Feb. 8-12 in Houston; and the Sept. 13-16 Southwest RV Super Show in Dallas.

RV and camping enthusiasts can order the nearly 150-page directory online by visiting www.texascampgrounds.com. The 2012 Texas RV Travel & Camping Guide is also posted on the website in digital page-turning format.

The 2012 directory provides detailed descriptions of more than 350 private campgrounds and RV resorts, or roughly two thirds of the private parks in Texas. A small number of New Mexico, Oklahoma and Arkansas parks are also included in the directory.

The directory is broken up into seven sections, each representing a distinct region of Texas. An eighth section is dedicated to New Mexico, Oklahoma and Arkansas. Locator maps are provided at the beginning of each section, with numbered listings of the campgrounds for each region. Campgrounds are also alpha-indexed by city and park name.

Each campground listing includes a grid that lists the park’s facilities, services and amenities as well as driving directions, a miniature locator map and many parks have panoramic photos showing off what campers can experience.

The directory also features a Texas Saver Card, which provides 10% to 15% discounts at participating parks.

The 2012 directory also includes a separate section listing campgrounds with cabin and cottage rentals as well as a listing of park model manufacturers.

Recreational park trailers or “park models” are 400-square foot, movable resort cottages. Typically upscale in appearance, they often include hardwood floors, bay windows and lofts as well as cherry, oak or maple cabinetry. And because park models are technically classified as recreational vehicles, they can be set up on leased or purchased sites in campgrounds and RV parks and used as weekend retreats or seasonal vacation dwellings.

Schaeffer said almost 25% of Texas campgrounds have cabin or cottage rentals. Many of the parks that offer cabin and cottage rentals also have sites for lease or for sale to park model owners.

The 2012 guide also includes two-dozen pages of articles and pictures highlighting things to see and do in specific regions of Texas as well as information about various camping clubs, including the Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA), the Good Sam Club, the Woodall’s North American Campground Directory and the Trailer Life RV Parks, Campgrounds & Services Directory.
