Park Redo Vote Is Tabled by Town Officials (1/21/2019)

Story by Woodall's Campground Management

After two hours of public comment, and little discussion from the Franklin County (Va.) Board of Supervisors, the board tabled a request for a special use permit for a campground at Smith Mountain Lake, according to The Franklin News-Post.

Union Hall Supervisor Tommy Cundiff motioned to table the request until he received answers to legal questions he has regarding the proposal, after listening to approximately two dozen residents, business owners and attorneys speak.

“I had a couple questions coming into this, but a couple more came up tonight,” Cundiff said.

The request is for an RV campground and short-term rental cabins at Magnum Point Marina in Union Hall called Camp Reel Simple. The proposed campground is comprised of 28 RV sites and 14 cabins on 14 acres and is adjacent to the Magnum Point Marina, which is owned by the same applicants for the permit – John Mathena, Lauren Carter and John Fulton Jones Jr. who also co-own South Lake Motorsports LLC.

The campground would also include a pool area and comfort zone/shower facility.

The applicants had hoped to get construction underway immediately, so the campground could open by Memorial Day weekend.

The proposal was approved by the Franklin County Planning Commission in December but during the meeting it was discovered the owner name in the legal notice was incorrect, so a second public hearing was held Jan. 8.
