Illinois' Palisades State Park will more than double its footprint after a decision by the Game, Fish and Park Commission Friday (March 1) to acquire donated land.
The state park, about 20 miles to the northeast of Sioux Falls near Garretson, has been bursting at the seams for more than three years now, said Katie Ceroll, director for the parks division.
More than 90,000 people visit the 157-acre park each year, operating at 99% capacity, Ceroll said. The expansion will add much needed campground sites and extra recreational aspects to the park to the south of the existing park.
"I know for a fact that we have a demand for more campsites," Ceroll said. "Past that, it's understanding which amenities to emphasize and making sure we're putting in what's right for folks who'll use that area."
