Md. Beach & Campground to Be Restored (1/17/2019)

Story by Woodall's Campground Management

The Calvert County (Md.) Board of Commissioners authorized a budget adjustment of $66,500 to restore Breezy Point Beach and Campground, according to The Calvert Recorder.

Multiple weather events over last summer caused beach erosion rendering 10 campsites unsafe and unusable.

“It needs to be done. It has to happen. It’s a beautiful area, but it’s been taking a beating year after year,” Commissioner Mike Hart said, referring to the excessive rainfall. “It’s going to cost us much more in the future if we don’t address it.”

Currently, there are groins — structures built to stop water flow and limit movement of sediment — in place that are meant to stabilize and maintain the beach under normal weather stresses.

County staff members report the groins have gradually failed to retain the beach and prevent erosion, with the largest erosion event happening on July 22, 2018.
