Park Development Going Before Public Again (1/7/2019)

Story by Woodall's Campground Management

A proposed campground and RV park in Union Hall, Va., near Smith Mountain Lake will get a second public hearing before Franklin County's planning commission, according to The Roanoke Times.

The commission recommended approval of a special-use permit for the project, known as Camp Reel Simple, in December, but after discovering that the applicant's company name was misidentified in the application, it was decided the planning commission would hear the issue again at its 6 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 8) meeting.

South Lake Motor Sports LLC plans to build a facility with 28 RV sites and 14 cabins on 14.25 acres on Old Salem School Road. The facility is meant to attract tourists and vacationers and a report by county staff indicates stays would be limited to two weeks.

The campground has become a divisive topic in the community. A petition in opposition to it garnered more than 120 signatures. An online petition started to drum up support for the project had earned more than 500 signatures as of Friday afternoon.

The first public hearing drew speakers both for and against the project. Steve Sandy, the county's director of planning and community development, said the room was split about evenly.
